Choosing between the Butterfly backrest and the TriFlex backrest

The Butterfly backrest combines fabric with polymer – a flexible synthetic material – to form a membrane that moulds to your body shape. This largely eliminates pressure points, which is particularly important when you’re sitting for hours on end.

The TriFlex backrest is made entirely of polymer. Thanks to their size, shape and pattern, the perforations provide the same support zones, but without a fabric layer. As a result, this version meets stricter cleaning requirements.

Both variants are included in the range, in various colour combinations. You can recognise the Butterfly models by their name; the other models feature the TriFlex backrest. Otherwise, it is the same chair, so your choice comes down purely to personal preference and ease of maintenance.

What makes the Herman Miller Mirra 2 lighter and more agile

• Harmonic 2 movement mechanism: aligns with your body’s natural pivot points, helping you stay balanced as you change position.

• Loop backrest: is suspended from the chair at two points, allowing the backrest to flex as you turn to the side.

• AireWeave seat: distributes your weight evenly and prevents heat build-up.

• PostureFit: supports your spine at the base near the sacrum and keeps your pelvis in place, so you’re less likely to slump.

What we look out for when refurbishing a Herman Miller Mirra 2

With this model, the work mainly involves the materials. The backrest should be taut. This applies just as much to the Butterfly as it does to the TriFlex. If the backrest has started to sag, we either repair it or replace it entirely.

We also test the Harmonic 2 movement mechanism and the gas spring. We replace worn castors and worn armrest upholstery. We then clean the AireWeave seat. The chair itself always remains an original Herman Miller.

How the two generations differ

The Herman Miller Mirra 1 is heavier and has a more distinctive shape. We receive very few of this model, so the range remains limited.

The Herman Miller Mirra 2 is still in production, so we receive more of these, in various versions and colours. So weigh up what matters most to you: the original character or the wider choice.
